SilencerShop's Guide to Buying a Silencer
How to buy NFA items while out of the country/deployed
Many people not familiar with NFA (National Firearms Act) items mistakenly believe that perhaps owning a silencer is illegal or requires a special license. This is simply not true. Colorado is one of the many states where suppressor ownership is legal. The only thing different that purchasing a firearm is that an NFA item, in this case a silencer, must be registered  with the federal government and a $200 tax stamp purchased for it.

The first step in purchasing a silencer is to decide how you want to register it with the federal government. There are two methods by which one can register an NFA item. This first is an individual registration and the second is registration within a trust. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Trust NFA Registration Advantages
  • In the event of a death to someone on the trust, other trustees can legally take possession of the NFA items on the trust without any additional paperwork
  • Anyone listed as a trustee in the trust can be in possession of the suppressor
  • The same trust can be used for all future NFA items

Trust NFA Registration Disadvantages
  • Initial work to setup the trust is required. Most folks hire a trust lawyer who creates trusts. We recommend silencershop.com for simplicity.
  • Every responsible person on the trust will need to be fingerprinted and photographed.

Individual NFA Registration Advantages
  • No need to have multiple people fingerprinted (as on a trust) so the filing process is faster

Individual NFA Registration Disadvantages
  • Only you can be in possession of the suppressor (while other people can still use they can only do so under your direct supervision)
After you decide how you intend to register your NFA item the next step is to pick out and purchase your item. There is one additional step, of course. The ATF must issue you a tax stamp after being approved by the NFA Branch. The stamp itself costs $200.00 and the waiting process can take several months. You can check out the current NFA tax stamp wait times here. Until the tax stamp is received you won’t be able to possess the item you’ve purchased. Still, suppressor ownership is well worth the wait.
