SilencerShop's Guide to Buying a Silencer
How to buy NFA items while out of the country/deployed
Trust NFA Registration Advantages
  • In the event of a death to someone on the trust, other trustees can legally take possession of the NFA items on the trust without any additional paperwork
  • Anyone listed as a trustee in the trust can be in possession of the suppressor
  • The same trust can be used for all future NFA items

Trust NFA Registration Disadvantages
  • Initial work to setup the trust is required. Most folks hire a trust lawyer who creates trusts. We recommend silencershop.com for simplicity.
  • Every responsible person on the trust will need to be fingerprinted and photographed.

Individual NFA Registration Advantages
  • No need to have multiple people fingerprinted (as on a trust) so the filing process is faster

Individual NFA Registration Disadvantages
  • Only you can be in possession of the suppressor (while other people can still use they can only do so under your direct supervision)
After you decide how you intend to register your NFA item the next step is to pick out and purchase your item. There is one additional step, of course. The ATF must issue you a tax stamp after being approved by the NFA Branch. The stamp itself costs $200.00 and the waiting process can take several months. You can check out the current NFA tax stamp wait times here. Until the tax stamp is received you won’t be able to possess the item you’ve purchased. Still, suppressor ownership is well worth the wait.

NOTE: Once a suppressor has been approved, you have 30 days to pickup or you WILL accrue storage fees at a rate of $5 per day. After 90 days of no contact we will consider your item abandoned and the form 4 will be voided with the ATF with no refund due to you. By sending us your suppressor or purchasing one from us you are agreeing to these terms.

For more information stop by our store and talk to our folks behind the counter. We’re happy to help you with your suppressed shooting needs!
